Viridian Lithium selected as a Strategic Project by the European Commission under the Critical Raw Materials Act
26/03/2025Viridian Lithium is proud to announce its selection as a strategic project by the European Commission under the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRM Act). This recognition reinforces Viridian Lithium’s role in securing a sustainable and resilient supply of lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM) for the European battery industry.
About the CRM Act
The Critical Raw Materials Act, introduced in April 2024 by the European Commission, aims to reduce the European Union’s dependence on external sources for critical raw materials. By fostering domestic production, refining, and recycling capabilities, the CRM Act strengthens Europe’s economic security, supports the energy transition, and enhances industrial competitiveness.
As part of the CRM Act, strategic projects benefit from streamlined permitting processes, access to financial support mechanisms, and enhanced visibility among policymakers and investors. This initiative aligns with the EU’s ambition to secure at least 10% of its annual raw material consumption through domestic extraction and ensure at least 40% of refining and processing takes place within Europe by 2030.
A Milestone for Viridian Lithium
Viridian Lithium’s selection under the CRM Act represents a significant milestone in its mission to establish Europe’s leading lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM) conversion facility. As Europe accelerates its transition towards clean mobility and renewable energy storage, this recognition underscores the strategic importance of a European-based lithium refining industry.
Being part of the CRM Act framework provides Viridian Lithium with:
- Regulatory facilitation: Accelerated permitting processes to fast-track project implementation.
- Investment attractiveness: Increased visibility among financial institutions and stakeholders supporting the green transition.
- Strategic alignment: Integration into the EU’s long-term vision for battery independence and circular economy development.
With this recognition, Viridian Lithium is committed to accelerating its project development, engaging with key stakeholders, and ensuring that its refinery becomes a cornerstone of Europe’s lithium supply chain. The company remains dedicated to sustainability, innovation, and contributing to the European Green Deal’s ambitious decarbonisation targets.
